A head swap replaces the head in a photo, including rebuilding the hair. In SwapShoot, upload the photo to change and a photo of the new head. About a minute later, you get the same shot back with the new head. Pose, clothes, hands, background and light stay unchanged.

## Start with the photograph you want to keep

For a creator, the starting point is often a photograph with a pose, outfit or setting worth keeping. A head swap lets you change the head within that shot. Decide which photograph should provide the scene before choosing the second image. That first choice sets the pose, clothes, hands, background and light in the result.

The second photo provides the new head. Hair is rebuilt with that head, so look at more than the face when choosing it. Read the [face swap vs head swap comparison](https://swapshoot.com/face-swap-vs-head-swap) to understand the difference. Keep both roles clear: one image is the shot to change, and the other is the head to use. This makes it easier to review whether the result matches your intention.

## Two examples

Each row is one swap: the photograph that supplies the shot, the photo of the new head, and the result. The face and hair change; the rest of the shot stays as photographed.

### Olive jacket

- Original: ![Original: man with a buzz cut and stubble in an olive shirt jacket, in dappled forest light](https://swapshoot.com/img/olive-jacket-target.jpg)
- New head: ![New head: clean-shaven man with short dark side-parted hair on a plain grey background](https://swapshoot.com/img/olive-jacket-head.jpg)
- Swapped: ![Swapped: the same forest shot with short dark side-parted hair; the olive jacket, pose and dappled light are unchanged](https://swapshoot.com/img/olive-jacket-result.jpg)

A buzz cut and stubble become short, side-parted dark hair and a clean shave. The olive shirt jacket and the dappled forest light stay unchanged.

### Skateboard sunset

- Original: ![Original: woman with long brown hair holding a red skateboard behind her shoulders in low sun with lens flare](https://swapshoot.com/img/skateboard-sunset-target.jpg)
- New head: ![New head: woman with straight black hair and bangs on a plain grey background](https://swapshoot.com/img/skateboard-sunset-head.jpg)
- Swapped: ![Swapped: the same skateboard shot with straight black hair and bangs; the skateboard, black top, pose and sun flare are unchanged](https://swapshoot.com/img/skateboard-sunset-result.jpg)

Long brown hair becomes straight black hair with bangs. The skateboard across the shoulders, the black top and the low sun and lens flare stay unchanged.

## Upload the two photos in the browser

Open SwapShoot in your browser and sign in with Google or any email address. First, upload the photograph you want to change. Then upload a photo of the new head. Before you proceed, check that you have permission from the people in both photos and that everyone shown is at least 18 years old.

Make the swap, then allow about a minute for the result. Use that time estimate as a guide when trying a photo. Once the result is ready, compare it with your original shot. Begin with the head, then look at the hair and how the new head sits within the photograph you chose.

## Give the head a clear view

The tool works best with one person whose face is clearly visible. Start there for your first attempt. Look for hair crossing the face, a hand near the eyes or an object hiding part of the head. These are useful things to notice before uploading, because they may make another try necessary.

Extreme angles can also need another attempt. If the result does not look right, try a different photo with a clearer view of the face. When deciding between two candidate photos, compare the head angle and visible light. This is a practical selection check, rather than a promise that any particular pair will work.

## Review the whole head, then save the result

Review the hair as part of the edit. A head swap rebuilds it with the new head, so it belongs in your check alongside the face. Then compare the pose, clothes, hands, background and light with the starting photograph. Those parts of the shot stay as photographed. Choose another input if the head needs another try.

Results are kept in your Library for 24 hours. Download anything you want to keep while it is available. Uploads are not kept. Make saving the result part of your editing session, especially if you plan to return to the image later. The Library is a temporary place to find a result.

## Start with free swaps, then pick a plan

Each account gets 5 free swaps; the first is clean, the next four carry a small SwapShoot watermark. After that, swaps cost as low as $0.09 each on a 30-day or yearly pass, or you can buy them as you go, paid in crypto; paid swaps have no watermark. Use the free swaps to try photos that meet the visibility and permission requirements, then review the results yourself. The tool works with photos only. See [plans and prices](https://swapshoot.com/pricing) for the details, or read the [head swap API status](https://swapshoot.com/head-swap-api) if you are building an integration. A video clip is outside the current workflow, even if it contains a clear view of a head. Choose a still photograph when you prepare the pair of images for your next attempt.
