For cosplay posts and thumbnails, swap your own head, hair included, onto a pose or outfit shot you own or have permission to use. The target stance, costume and lighting stay; only the head changes. Disclose edits when a thumbnail could mislead viewers. A swap takes about a minute.

## Why use a head swap for cosplay and thumbnails?

A good costume shot takes work. The outfit, the props, the stance and the light all have to come together, and the best frame is not always the one where your face looks right. A thumbnail has the same problem: the pose and the framing are planned, but the expression might be off, or you want the same layout for several videos.

A head swap keeps that work. The shot you upload first stays the fixed reference, so the stance, the costume, the props in your hands, the background and the light come back as photographed. Only the head is replaced, with the face and hair from your own head photo. The [pose-preserving head swap guide](https://swapshoot.com/pose-preserving-head-swap) explains why the rest of the shot stays the same.

## Which photo goes where?

Each swap uses two photos with two different jobs. The first is the costume or pose shot: it decides everything except the head. The second is a clear photo of your own head: it supplies the face and the hair. The table below sums it up.

For the head photo, pick one where your face is clearly visible and your head faces roughly the same way as in the costume shot. Hair across the face, a hand over the eyes, a mask or a prop in front of the head can need another try, and so can extreme angles.

**Which photo goes where in a cosplay or thumbnail swap**

| Photo | What it is | What it decides |
|---|---|---|
| Step 1 photo | Your costume or pose shot | Stance, costume, props, hands, background and light |
| Step 2 photo | A clear photo of your own head | Face and hair |
| Result | The step 1 shot with your head | Only the head changes |

## How do you make a cosplay head swap?

Step 1: upload the costume or pose shot. Open SwapShoot in your browser and add the photo you want to keep. It should show one person.

Step 2: add your head photo and swap. Upload a clear photo of your own head, then press Swap head. You can add both photos before signing in; sign in with Google or any email address when you press Swap. Before your first swap you confirm once that you are 18 or older and have permission from the people in your photos.

Step 3: check and download. About a minute later the result appears next to the original so you can compare them. Look at the face, then the hair line, then the edges where the neck meets the costume. Download the result you want to keep. Results are kept in your Library for 24 hours, and uploads are not kept.

## What does it look like?

These rows are not cosplay shots; they show what any head swap keeps. Each row is one swap: the original photo, the head photo used, and the result. Compare the first and last picture: the pose, the hands, what they hold, the clothes and the light stay the same.

### Skateboard sunset

- New head: ![New head: woman with straight black hair and bangs on a plain grey background](https://swapshoot.com/img/skateboard-sunset-head.jpg)
- Swapped: ![Swapped: the same skateboard shot with straight black hair and bangs; the skateboard, black top, pose and sun flare are unchanged](https://swapshoot.com/img/skateboard-sunset-result.jpg)

Long brown hair becomes straight black hair with bangs. The skateboard across the shoulders, the black top and the low sun and lens flare stay unchanged.

### Rooftop sunset

## Costumes and wigs: face swap or head swap?

A face swap changes the face and keeps the hair that was in the photo. A head swap rebuilds the whole head, hair included, from the head photo. That matters for cosplay, because hair is often part of the character.

If the costume shot already has the wig you want, the hair in your head photo will replace it, so wear the wig in your head photo too. If you want your own hair in the result, use a head photo without the wig. Read the [face swap vs head swap comparison](https://swapshoot.com/face-swap-vs-head-swap) for more on the difference.

## Whose photos and likeness can you use?

Use your own likeness, on a shot you own or have permission to use. That can be a photo of you in costume, a photo a friend took of you, or a pose shot whose owner has agreed. Everyone who can be recognised in either photo must be 18 or older and must have agreed. Do not use another cosplayer's photo without their consent, and do not use this to pass yourself off as a real person.

For YouTube thumbnails, be honest with viewers. If an edited thumbnail could make people believe something happened that did not, say that the image is edited, in the description or on the image itself. The tool works with still photos only, not video, and handles one face per swap.

## How much does it cost to try?

Each account gets 5 free swaps: the first result is clean, and the next four carry a small SwapShoot watermark. You do not pay anything for the free swaps. After that, see [plans and prices](https://swapshoot.com/pricing): as low as $0.09 a swap on a plan, with no watermark.

## Questions

### Can I use SwapShoot for cosplay photos of myself?

Yes. Upload your costume shot first and a clear photo of your own head second. The stance, costume and light stay as photographed and the head, hair included, is rebuilt from your head photo.

### Is it OK for YouTube thumbnails?

Yes, with your own likeness on a shot you own or have permission to use. If an edited thumbnail could mislead viewers about what happened, disclose that the image is edited.

### What's the difference between face swap and head swap for costumes and wigs?

A face swap keeps the hair from the costume shot. A head swap rebuilds the hair from your head photo, so wear the wig in your head photo if you want it in the result.
